For businesses with an ABN — not households. This page covers two tiers: everyday small business support (Greater Darwin, Alice Springs, plus nationwide federal schemes) and larger commercial property, strata and remote industrial programs further down the page.
NT-specific programs, by region
The federal programs further down apply nationwide regardless of region — these tags are just for the NT-specific ones.
Greater Darwin
Alice Springs
What the tags below mean
One more thing to watch on this page specifically: a green category tag means an NT-specific program; an amber "Federal ·" tag means it applies Australia-wide, not just the Territory.
Home & Small business support
The everyday tier — battery and equipment rebates for a typical NT small business, plus the federal schemes that stack on top regardless of state.
NT Home and Business Battery Scheme
Rebate toward installing a battery system for your business, with a matched co-contribution required for hardware and installation costs.
Eligibility
- Territory-based small business with an active ABN
- Co-contribution matching typically required for hardware installs
NT-wide — Greater Darwin, Alice Springs and elsewhere in the Territory
NT Business Grants (Upgrades & Security)
Funding for business upgrades and security improvements — energy-efficient equipment, security systems, or general facility upgrades.
Eligibility
- Territory-based small business with an active ABN
NT-wide — Greater Darwin, Alice Springs and elsewhere in the Territory
Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES / STCs)
Upfront discount on eligible commercial solar and battery installations under 100kW, calculated as tradeable Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) your installer typically deducts from the system price on the spot.
Eligibility
- Any business installing eligible commercial solar/storage under 100kW
Nationwide — all 8 states and territories, not NT-specific
ARENA Clean Energy Startup & Innovation Funds / SME Energy Grants
Targeted federal funding pools for energy equipment upgrades and clean-energy innovation projects, run through ARENA and related SME grant programs.
Eligibility
- Active ABN
- SME footprint, typically 1–199 employees
Nationwide — all 8 states and territories, not NT-specific
Commercial Property & Strata
Larger-scale premises — warehouses, factories, strata-titled buildings — plus one NT program aimed specifically at remote industrial and logistics operations, not typical Darwin or Alice Springs shopfronts.
Expanded SRES (Commercial Solar up to 1MW)
Upfront certificate discount for mid-scale commercial rooftop solar — warehouses, factories, strata-titled buildings — covering systems up to 1,000kW (1MW) and reducing upfront system costs by roughly 20%.
Eligibility
- Commercial systems up to 1,000kW (1MW)
Nationwide — mid-sized businesses and commercial property anywhere in Australia
Small Business Energy Incentive
A bonus 20% tax deduction on eligible depreciating assets that support electrification and energy efficiency — think efficient fridges, induction cooktops, batteries or solar — on top of the deduction you'd already claim.
Eligibility
- Aggregated annual turnover under $50 million
- Claimed through your tax return, not applied for separately
Nationwide — not tied to property type or state
NT Business Innovation & Investment Grants
Co-funding for remote facility solar/battery hybrid microgrids, for businesses scaling up energy independence in high-tariff regional and remote NT utility zones.
Eligibility
- NT-registered enterprise scaling up energy independence in a high-tariff regional utility zone
Remote industrial & logistics parks — not Greater Darwin or Alice Springs specifically
On an embedded network? Read this first.
If you're in a shopping centre, office tower or industrial park, you may not have a direct account with a major energy retailer — you're buying power through a private network run by your landlord or body corporate instead. That can mean missing out on standard bill relief, because your meter was never logged in the usual state databases. It doesn't mean you're ineligible — it usually means there's a separate, secondary application form. Check with the specific program below rather than assuming you don't qualify.
What's the difference between the two sections on this page?
"Small business support" covers what most NT businesses would look at — battery rebates, general upgrade grants, and small-scale federal solar discounts. "Commercial Property & Strata" is for larger-scale premises — warehouses, factories, strata-titled buildings — plus one remote/regional NT grant aimed at industrial and logistics operations rather than a typical shopfront.
Is the NT Business Innovation & Investment Grant available to Darwin CBD businesses?
Not really — it's aimed specifically at remote industrial and logistics operations dealing with high regional utility tariffs, not typical Darwin or Alice Springs premises. Most Darwin or Alice Springs small businesses are better served by the programs in the Small Business Support section above.
What's the difference between STCs and the Expanded SRES?
They're the same underlying certificate mechanism (Small-scale Technology Certificates), just applied at different system sizes — standard STCs cover systems under 100kW, while the Expanded SRES extends the same certificate discount up to 1MW for larger commercial rooftops like warehouses and strata buildings.
What's the difference between a grant and a tax incentive?
A grant or rebate puts money in your pocket, or offsets a cost, directly. A tax incentive like the Small Business Energy Incentive reduces your taxable income instead — you still spend the money first and claim it back at tax time.
I'm on an embedded network — can I still apply?
Usually yes, but you may need a secondary application form since your meter isn't in the standard state database. Check the specific program's application page, or contact them directly if it isn't obvious.
How is this different from the household rebates page?
This page is specifically for NT businesses with an ABN. If you're looking for rebates as a homeowner or renter, see our NT household page instead.
